During 2004 the Institute will launch a series of short courses aimed at giving an introductory overview of a topic or area of concern to interested, yet busy, companies. Typically these short courses will start with a networking breakfast and last just the one day.

If your organisation has a company-wide issue that it needs to tackle, then the Institute will be happy to develop a bespoke short course for you - subject to the numbers being sufficient to support it.

Courses that we are planning include:

Focus on Sustainability
"Sustainability" is a word often used and perhaps too little understood. This short course will examine what sustainability means in a global context and apply the concepts and issues to your local business environment.

An introduction to Business and Sustainability
Learn how the workings of a business can impact upon the environment. What are the linkages between your processes, energy use, waste and your profits? How can altering the balance of any of these affect the environment and sustainability?

An introduction to the WEEE Directive
This far-reaching European directive - together with its sister directive RoHS - could change fundamentally not just the electronics industry in Europe but also how EVERY UK company does business. Find out how...

The Environment Agency - Good cop or bad cop?
The Environment Agency has wide ranging powers under its remit to enforce the various environmental legislations that already exist and that are coming into existence in ever greater numbers. This short course will aim to demonstrate to participants that the Environment Agency is NOT an organisation to be feared, but one that can help, guide and develop companies.

Environmental Management Systems ( EMS )
An introductory course to EMS . What is it? Why is it important for companies to have one? Is it a burdensome cost to the company or an opportunity to develop?

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Refuse
Understanding the "waste hierarchy" and how it can help to turn waste products into profitable opportunities.

Courses will be developed and presented mainly by the Institute's own specialist team. They will also be supported where necessary by experts from the Nottingham Trent University , business or Government agencies.
