What is an Environmental Management System?
In basic terms an EMS a systematic way to identify and control the effects that a company has on the environment.
An EMS operates in a similar way to a quality management system and requires a company to look at its practices, activities and products, to set a policy and procedures, and to identify actions to control and improve the impact(s) on the environment.
An EMS does not have to focus on the negative impacts and can be a way to demonstrate the company’s positive actions.

Why Implement an EMS?
There are a range of reasons that a company may want to implement an EMS and the majority of these have strong business reasons to do so:
- Cost savings can be made through improved efficiency and productivity. These can be achieved by detecting ways to minimise waste and dispose of it more effectively or by learning how to use energy more efficiently.
- An EMS can help in ensuring legal compliance present and future. It verifies compliance with current legislation and can assist in avoiding incidents and accidents which may lead to prosecution.
- It is a way of managing risk exposure and can make insurance cover more accessible.
- Company image – an EMS , especially those accredited can raise the company profile, meet the requirements of customers and gain market advantage by demonstrating commitment to environmental improvement.
