Environmental Management Systems (EMS)

How much time and money is required?

There is no set time for the implementation of an EMS and the rate of implementation will depend on the on a variety of factors not least the commitment of the management, however realistically it is unlikely that a full system will be completed from scratch under 6 months.

Again the man hours required will vary depending on the type and nature of company and the activities, the presence of any existing management systems or procedures and the scale of the EMS .

Similarly the cost of implementation will vary however will include costs for:

  • Man hours
  • Training programmes
  • Resources required for environmental management programmes
  • External consultancy support*
  • External certification fees

n the long term these costs should be balanced against the benefits, including direct cost savings and new business. Again these benefits will vary and can be substantial.
