History of the Institute
The Institute for Sustainable Development in Business was created in 1998 to help businesses,
business support organisations and communities implement Sustainable Development – ie economic,
environmental and social progress. It is a cross-faculty unit operating as a “window” onto all the environmental and sustainable development expertise including research and consultancy in
the University.
Institute Successes and Past Developments
Since being established the Institute has received investments of over £6 million to work
with businesses, and has provided consultancy and research to the private and public sectors.
Two very successful knowledge transfer partnerships (KTPs) with an international company have
helped the company to integrate environmental improvements into their strategy and resulted in
significant on-going savings.
ISDB hosts the Environmental Industries Forum (EIForum) to support and develop the
environmental goods and services sector. The Pot of Gold competition aims to support innovative
environmental solutions which will have a significant impact for the industry.
ISDB has also
set up an umbrella social enterprise and is supporting the development of two social firms in
Nottingham with two more in the planning stages. The social firms will create employment for
people who are unable to work in the commercial labour market and provide training and work
experience for those returning to employment.
ISDB had a very successful BTCV project for volunteers in the environmental sector. We are
undertaking a research project with a registered social landlord (formerly housing associations)
into governance and developing sustainable communities. Feasibility studies include the
redistribution of surplus food and the potential for voluntary organisations to become social enterprises.
Environmental Management
The Institute for Sustainable Development in Business (ISDB) is introducing an Environmental Management System (EMS).
An Environmental Management System is a system which manages the environmental impacts of an organisation. The aim of the EMS is to demonstrate improving environmental performance and to ensure that environmental legislation is being met.
Our EMS is being implemented to meet the international standard ISO14001. This requires an external assessor to verify that our system meets the necessary requirements.
Obtaining ISO 14001 registration allows an organisation to demonstrate sound environmental performance and effective procedures in identifying, controlling and managing the environmental impacts of its activities, products or services.
The support of all staff within the scope of the system is required in striving to lessen our impact on the environment and in achieving our overall environmental aims.
